Summary: Dondup, a young government official who dreams of escaping his rural village for America, misses his bus to the city and is forced to hitchhike with an elderly apple seller, a young monk, and an elderly man and his beautiful daughter. Along the way, the monk tells the story of another young man that mirrors Dondup's ambitions.
