Summary: An autobiographical film based on the director's life beginning in 1942 during Hitler's struggle to wrest Egypt, especially the city Alexandria, from the British Army. Yehia, an aspiring actor, and his friends experience the impact of war. Yehia studies cinema in Alexandria, stages his first makeshift productions, and finally reaches the conclusion that his future lies in America.
