Struggling to adjust to civilian life in a postwar seventeenth-century alternate-history Russia, ex-soldier Bernie Zeppi is hired by a government emissary to help usher in a new era of slavish serfdom to Moscow, where Bernie becomes an unexpected advocate of social progress.
